Description of 2019 Mentor Cup

Following a successful inaugural campaign last fall, The Mentor Cup is set to return to Tidewater Golf Club.

On October 26, 2019, we welcome 16 two-person teams consisting of an adult mentor and junior mentee. Teams will play a 9-hole competition with a format designed to build memories that will last a lifetime.

The format will will be a scramble with the intention of placing an emphasis on bonding, partnership and individual responsibility. The top 3 teams win prizes.

The 2019 tournament is slated for an 8:30am ET shotgun start at renowned Tidewater Golf Club in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Contestants will be treated to complimentary meals, gift bags, plus educational and motivational clinics by our featured mentors.

Entry fee per team for the Mentor Cup is $200. Applications will be available at www.mentorcup.com on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

CURRENT FEATURED MENTORS FOR 2019

Golf legend Nancy Lopez, a 48-time winner on the LPGA Tour and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, has committed to attend the 2019 Mentor Cup. The three-time major champion is planning to conduct a junior clinic and play in the Dream Challenge by Liberty Mutual, an 18-hole captain’s choice event.

Dan Brooks – Duke women’s golf head coach knows what it takes to make it to the pinnacle of a collegiate sport. In 35 years as the coach of the Duke Blue Devils, he has helped guide his squads to seven NCAA National Championships, 20 ACC Championships and 136 team victories, which is the most of any women’s golf coach in Division I history.

WHAT HAPPENED DURING OUR INAUGURAL MENTOR CUP WEEKEND

ON OCTOBER 26-27

October 26 – Gene’s Dream Gala

On Friday, October 26th, an elegant evening at The Surf Golf & Beach Club welcomed more than 100 guests who were delighted by a surprise visit from golf’s funnyman David Feherty. After enjoying complimentary cocktails and a silent auction, guests were treated to a delicious meal while being entertained by the likes of Kelly Tilghman, David Feherty, Charlie Rymer and football great Sterling Sharpe. The night also featured a live auction with Duke men’s basketball ‘game of choice’ tickets, a 2020 Ryder Cup experience and a golf getaway with Charlie Rymer at the prestigious Honors Club in Tennessee.

October 27 – Mentor Cup Golf Tournament

On Saturday morning, October 27th, more than 50 teams gathered to christen a brand new event which featured 9 holes of captain’s choice and 9 holes of modified alternate shot at Tidewater Golf Club. Mentors and junior mentees partnered up for a chance to become the first winners of the Mentor Cup. A chilly, cloud covered fall morning gave way to a warmer, sunnier afternoon. The winning score in the Advanced Flight was an eye-popping 62! The winning totals for the Intermediate and Beginner Flights were both 75. Congrats to all of this year’s winning teams!

October 27 – FEHERTY: OFF TOUR LIVE!-

The inaugural Mentor Cup weekend ended in thrilling fashion when the hilarious David Feherty performed his wildly popular stand up comedy show at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. 150 VIP guests enjoyed a special meet and greet with David, complete with an autographed copy of his latest book. All proceeds went to Gene’s Dream Foundation and The First Tee of Coastal Carolinas.

Our 2018 featured mentor was NFL & SC Gamecock star, Sterling Sharpe. As a wide receiver, he and Brett Favre were a remarkable tandem for the Green Bay Packers. Sharpe participated in this year’s tournament, teaming up with one lucky junior golfer.
At this year’s inaugural Mentor Cup, Hall of Fame Coach Dan Brooks of the Duke women’s golf team conducted a clinic alongside his former player Kelly Tilghman on the educational opportunities golf can provide to children. We were honored to have him as a featured mentor in 2018.
Our Featured Teacher this year was Jamie Fischer who is a decorated instructor and player in the game of golf. She recently tied for 12th in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open and regularly appears on several renowned Top 50 Teachers Lists around the country. Jamie provided adults and juniors with pricesless golf lessons on Saturday morning of the Mentor Cup tournament on Tidewater’s driving range.
